Ornaments for Aquariums

The basic flake or pellet diet includes all the supplements your fish needs. Different types of special fish foods should be offered at least twice a week instead of the basic diet. Variety is important, these secondary foods can include frozen or freeze-dried brine shrimp, bloodworms, tubifex worms, or any other food made especially for your fish. Remember, feeding your fish the same food day after day can lead to malnutrition, shortened life span, and faded color.

Start by taking a very small portion of food (1-2 flakes or pellets per fish) and put it in the tank. Now observe your fish. Do they immediately eat the food while it is still on the surface? If so put in a little more. If food begins to fall to the bottom, stop. Experiment to find out what is right for your tank using the guideline above. Since some fish may overeat so you only want to feed what they can eat in about two minutes.

Food should not fall to the bottom. The #1 cause of fish death is overfeeding. The most important thing to remember about feeding fish is that it is very easy to overfeed them and very hard to starve them.

Fish Aquarium ornaments and decorationsPeople are finding that having an aquarium is fun and easy to take care of whether you have gold fish or expensive fish.  They are also great for people who live in apartments where other pets aren’t allowed. You can see aquariums just about any where from your doctor’s office to your favorite store and it’s so easy and inexpensive to dress them up with lights and all kinds of decorations!  Having an aquarium is the easiest way to bring a little of nature right into your home and fish require very little maintenance and the aquarium can be anywhere from a one gallon on up to any size you have room for. I have a 20 gallon fish aquarium in my living room with lights and all and I like to turn the lights down low and just watch my little finned friends just swimming happily about in their little home!  It’s calming and relaxing and the ornaments and lights you can get for fish aquariums is mind boggling!  My kids love to watch the fish, too and love the different plants and ornaments I have in there, too!

Having a healthy aquarium complete with green plants, proper aeration, and the right amount of light will help your fish to live longer.  It’s important to have a few living plants in an aquarium to remove harmful particles and molecules from the water, and also to provide the feel of natural vegetation for the fish.  You will want to avoid aquarium ornaments that have sharp edges, or haven’t been properly sterilized.  It’s also important to have a working air filter for your aquarium, and to clean it regularly.  If the water is not aerated, it is possible for fish to suffocate.  You should also have a light for your aquarium, as this will provide warmth to the fish during colder weather.  Tropical fish will need a stronger light source.

The most common cause of death to fish is a harmful living environment; fish can survive without food for a fair amount of time, but still require daily feeding to be as healthy as possible.

aquarium ornaments

Fish are probably the lowest-maintenance pet imaginable, so they are a good starter pet for kids.   How many of us remember carrying around a bag full of water with a fish in it and being totally excited?  (Over thirty years ago, I named my own goldfish was named Freddy the Freeloader, because he quickly developed the approximate circumference of a golf ball and lived many years longer than was expected.)

Decorating the fishbowl or aquarium is half the fun of having a fish.  There are so many ways to jazz up the fish’s environment with aquarium ornaments from First Rate Pets.  Have fun with it!
