The basic flake or pellet diet includes all the supplements your fish needs. Different types of special fish foods should be offered at least twice a week instead of the basic diet. Variety is important, these secondary foods can include frozen or freeze-dried brine shrimp, bloodworms, tubifex worms, or any other food made especially for your fish. Remember, feeding your fish the same food day after day can lead to malnutrition, shortened life span, and faded color.

Start by taking a very small portion of food (1-2 flakes or pellets per fish) and put it in the tank. Now observe your fish. Do they immediately eat the food while it is still on the surface? If so put in a little more. If food begins to fall to the bottom, stop. Experiment to find out what is right for your tank using the guideline above. Since some fish may overeat so you only want to feed what they can eat in about two minutes.

Food should not fall to the bottom. The #1 cause of fish death is overfeeding. The most important thing to remember about feeding fish is that it is very easy to overfeed them and very hard to starve them.

In the Summer temperatures reach into the 90s and 100s. Such intense heat is not only dangerous for humans, but for pets as well. Here are some tips to protect your pets during summer heat waves.Cars are potential death traps during the hot summer months because inside temperatures can climb to more than 120 degrees in just a few minutes, even on a mild sunny day.

It’s best to leave your pet at home while running errands during hot weather. If your pet is panting, has a staring or anxious expression, does not obey commands, has warm, dry skin and a high fever, rapid heartbeat, or is vomiting, lower the body temperature quickly, with cool water either by immersion or by spraying thoroughly with a garden hose. CALL YOUR VETERINARIAN IMMEDIATELY.

If your pet lives outdoors, make sure there is adequate shelter for protection from the midday sun and heat. Outdoor kennels should be well ventilated and in a shaded area. There should always be some shade for the pet to get out of the sun. Also, make sure there is plenty of fresh drinking water available to your pet. Another great idea is to give your pet ice cubes to chew on to cool down. Always place your pet’s water bowl  in a shaded area where it cannot be heated by the sun.
